Remote Work Trends in Europe

Remote Work Trends in Europe 2026: How Flexible Office Spaces Are Transforming the Way Businesses Operate

by Cowork Zagreb.

Remote work is no longer a temporary solution that emerged during the pandemic. Across Europe, it has become an integral part of business strategies, with companies increasingly combining work-from-home arrangements, office-based work, and the use of coworking spaces. According to European labor market research, hybrid work models will continue to expand throughout 2026, while employees increasingly seek flexibility, autonomy, and a better work–life balance.

In this context, flexible office spaces are becoming an essential part of modern business infrastructure. They provide companies, freelancers, and startups with a professional working environment without the long-term costs associated with traditional office leases.

Why Is Remote Work Continuing to Grow in Europe?

The European labor market is undergoing a significant transformation. Organizations are increasingly recognizing that employee productivity does not depend solely on their physical presence in the office.

The key drivers behind the growth of remote work include:

  • Greater flexibility for employees
  • Easier access to talent across different countries
  • Reduced operational costs
  • Improved work–life balance
  • Advances in digital collaboration tools

What is particularly interesting is that many European companies are no longer debating the question of “working from home or working from the office.” Instead, they are looking for the optimal combination of both models.

Hybrid Work Becomes the New Standard

One of the most significant remote work trends in Europe is the shift toward hybrid work models.

A hybrid work model allows employees to spend part of their time working from the office and part working from home or a coworking space. This approach combines the best elements of both worlds:

Benefits for Employees

  • Greater flexibility in scheduling
  • Less time spent commuting
  • Better focus for individual tasks
  • Higher job satisfaction

Benefits for Employers

  • Increased team productivity
  • Reduced office space costs
  • Improved employee retention
  • Access to a broader talent pool

Research shows that employees who have the opportunity to work flexibly often demonstrate higher levels of engagement and loyalty toward their employers.

How Coworking Spaces Increase Productivity

Although working from home offers many advantages, many professionals face challenges such as distractions, isolation, and a lack of a professional working environment.

That is why coworking spaces are experiencing strong growth across Europe.

Unlike a home office, a coworking environment provides:

  • A professional workspace
  • Fast and reliable internet connection
  • Meeting rooms
  • Networking opportunities
  • A clear boundary between work and private life

Many users report that this combination of flexibility and a professional atmosphere helps them maintain a high level of focus throughout the working day.

Growing demand for coworking spaces in Zagreb shows that entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote teams recognize the benefits of a flexible working environment that supports productivity and business growth.

Financial Efficiency of Flexible Office Spaces

Traditional office rentals often involve significant costs, including:

  • Long-term contracts
  • Utility bills
  • Space maintenance
  • Office equipment
  • Additional administrative expenses

Coworking models offer significantly greater flexibility, as users only pay for what they actually use.

This is particularly important for:

  • Start-up companies
  • Digital agencies
  • Freelancers
  • International teams
  • Entrepreneurs in the growth phase

The ability to quickly scale the number of workstations up or down allows organizations to adapt to market changes without major financial risks.

Coworking Spaces as Hubs for Networking and Innovation

One of the greatest advantages of coworking communities is not just the space itself, but the people.

In traditional remote work-from-home setups, professionals often remain isolated from other experts. In contrast, coworking spaces bring together:

  • Entrepreneurs
  • Developers
  • Marketing specialists
  • Consultants
  • Designers
  • Startup founders

Such an environment naturally creates opportunities for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the development of new business projects.

Many successful European startup stories actually began through connections made within coworking communities.

Benefits of Hybrid Work: Work–Life Balance and Employee Satisfaction

Research has shown that 84.4% of respondents consider the hybrid work model effective in various ways. This includes task execution and teamwork, work–life balance and job satisfaction, as well as communication, collaboration, and the overall employee experience. The survey results indicate that the model is widely praised for its flexibility, improvement of work–life balance, and increased job satisfaction. Respondents agree that hybrid work…

Why Coworking Spaces Are Ideal for Freelancers and Startups

Freelancers and startups often have limited resources, but they still need a professional environment that makes a good impression on clients and partners.

Flexible office spaces offer:

Professional infrastructure

  • Fully equipped offices
  • Conference rooms
  • Printers and office equipment
  • Reception services

Business community

  • Training sessions
  • Workshops
  • Networking events
  • Mentorship
  • Potential investors

Scalability

As the business grows, it is easy to increase the number of workstations without relocation or new investments.

Comparison of Work Models: Remote, Hybrid, Coworking, and Traditional Office

This table presents the main work models used across Europe, depending on the needs of companies and employees. Compare the key advantages of each model to gain a better understanding of which one best fits your business goals.

Work Model Key Advantages Best For
Remote work Increases flexibility, reduces commuting costs Freelancers and employees who require autonomy
Hybrid work Combines the benefits of office and home working Companies seeking to optimize productivity and collaboration
Coworking spaces Provides a professional environment and networking opportunities Startups and teams looking for a dynamic environment
Traditional office Enables real-time collaboration and a clear separation between private and professional life Companies that prefer direct, in-person interaction

Work models such as hybrid work and coworking spaces are becoming increasingly popular due to their advantages, while the traditional office still represents an important part of the business environment for certain companies. Choosing the right model can significantly impact employee productivity and business growth.

Technology as a Driver of Remote Work

Advances in technology are one of the key reasons for the success of remote work.

Today’s teams use:

  • Video conferencing platforms
  • Project management tools
  • Cloud data storage systems
  • Real-time collaborative documents
  • AI tools for process automation

During 2026, further integration of artificial intelligence into everyday business processes is expected, which will further increase the efficiency of remote teams.

New Regulatory Framework for Remote Work in the European Union

As remote work becomes the standard, European countries are developing regulatory frameworks that define:

  • Employee rights
  • Privacy protection
  • Data security
  • The right to disconnect after working hours
  • Conditions for working from another country

Employers who hire remote workers will increasingly need to pay attention to compliance with the legislation of different EU member states.

Mental Health and Work–Life Balance

One of the key trends for 2026 is an increased focus on employee mental health.

Research shows that flexible work models can:

  • reduce stress levels
  • increase employee satisfaction
  • lower employee turnover rates
  • improve overall productivity

At the same time, organizations are increasingly investing in employee support programs to prevent feelings of isolation that can sometimes occur in remote work environments.

The Future of Work: A Combination of Remote Work and Flexible Office Spaces

Trends for 2026 clearly show that the future of work is neither fully remote nor fully office-based.

The most successful organizations are adopting a hybrid approach that allows employees to choose between:

  • working from home
  • working from coworking spaces
  • working from a central office

Such a model provides the highest level of flexibility, productivity, and employee satisfaction.

For companies in Zagreb and across Croatia, flexible office spaces such as coworking centers represent a practical solution that supports modern ways of working, reduces costs, and enables the development of a professional community.

Flexibility and Inclusion: Benefits of Coworking Spaces for Engaged Employees

Some companies are considering offering external ‘coworking’ spaces to their engaged employees as an option to achieve flexibility and inclusion, providing them with the opportunity to maintain a sense of community and have access to on-site support. However, the motivations, benefits, and issues associated with the use of ‘coworking’ spaces for engaged employees remain insufficiently analyzed. This study applies a qualitative approach by conducting semi-structured interviews with Italian engaged employees who use ‘coworking’ spaces. Our analysis explores the benefits of using ‘coworking’ spaces and the reasons that motivate engaged employees to do so, as well as how relationships, social support, and collaboration with colleagues are perceived. The results show that the perceived main benefits relate to (a) flexibility and work efficiency and (b) relational opportunities, both on a personal and professional level.

Conclusion

Remote work in Europe is entering a new stage of development. Hybrid work models, coworking spaces, and digital collaboration are no longer future trends but a standard part of modern business practice.

Organizations that successfully combine flexibility, technology, and a high-quality working environment will be best positioned to attract talent and achieve sustainable growth throughout 2026 and the years ahead.
