The Impact of Coworking Spaces on Startup Innovativeness

  1. Open innovation and innovative performance have been widely studied in the literature. However, few studies have investigated the impact of openness to different types of external knowledge on the innovative performance of startups. Furthermore, the existing literature can be supplemented with additional research on how coworking spaces provided by accelerator programs can generate informal sources of knowledge that improve the innovative performance of accelerated startups. To address this research gap, we investigate whether startups participating in accelerator programs can improve their innovative performance through the transfer of information from informal networks provided by business accelerator programs. For this purpose, we collected two-stage data from 113 startups accelerated by Italian accelerators from 2013 to 2016, and response data collected in 2018. Our results show that competitors, educators, and investors are beneficial for different innovation outcomes of accelerated startups. These findings contribute to the literature on innovation management, small business management, accelerator literature, and coworking space literature.
